Ryan's diet was not really that special. Anyone could do it without a dietitian or nutritionist. It consisted of eating numerous small meals throughout the day rather than 3 large meals. Cutting back on the bad fats, adding good fats and adding good carbs.

Ryan's normal daily diet:

"The main thing I learned about this whole process is how important food is. Transforming your body quickly is a genetic ability, but can also be traumatic. Eating properly is 80% of the equation. Most people think it's the other way around..."

Getting enough calories to gain mass, but not fat.
Lots of oatmeal, eggs, protein bars for snacks, chicken, fish or steak.
Lots of small meals all day long.

"I really don't believe in that no-carb stuff. It's probably not good for you--and it makes you pretty cranky."

Breakfast: eggs, some "good" fat such as almond butter or avocado, and oatmeal with applesauce

Midmorning snack: protein bar

Lunch: tuna wrap or chicken and salad

Mid-afternoon snack: protein shake, protein bars, or apples and almonds

Dinner: salad, fish or chicken, brown rice, vegetables

Evening Snack: protein shake or protein bar

Each meal was eaten about 2 hours apart to "never let myself get hungry" or stuff myself. Ryan says the key to his ripped look was keeping his blood sugar level. Keeping your blood sugar levels even and eating several small meals per day is key to adding lean, solid mass. Getting plenty of good carbs and protein during the day and only protein after 8 pm.

Training was 6 days a week with routines that lasted 2 - 3 hours. Once Ryan had the body he wanted, he found that he could maintain the ripped look with only "maintenance workouts". Generally 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week.

Ryan said, "Weight training involved a variety of exercises too numerous to mention at reps of about 8-12, for 6 days a week."

"I'd work one body part per day," Ryan explains. His workout was broken down into chest day, back day, shoulder day, leg day, with arms mixed in.

"Don't know what I was benching. I remember it wasn't anything to brag about."

"If you hate your workout, you're not going to do it," explains Reynolds. Customize your fitness plan to meet your needs. He found it "meditative" to do ab exercises first instead of last.

Using Muscle Confusion - never letting his body get use to one set of workouts was key to his success. Ryan Reynolds never did the same workout routine twice, you are more likely to stick with your workouts if they are interesting. Reynolds included kickboxing, running and keeping his expectation realistic - meaning you can't get the body if you don't put in the work!

Alternating Muscle Groups

Strom said Ryan had a routine that worked opposing muscles each day to give Reynolds a full body workout. Instead of trying to do a full body workout each day - isolating muscles was the beginning of getting in excellent physical shape.

Working One Major Muscle Group Per Day

Ryan Reynolds workout routine was based on targeting one muscle group, like the abs or legs, during each workout.

With each day dedicated to one muscle group, like your legs, the other muscle groups could recover.

The key is that you regular workouts to keep your muscles growing and recovering. Sporatic workouts mean your muscles are always losing mass and you are starting from scratch every time.

Varying the Workouts

Ryan incorporated exercises like yoga or Pilates to work his muscles to build endurance and stretch them out, stretching prevented muscle cramps.

Maintenance:

Once Ryan got to his desired level of fitness, the workouts became less intense and less frequent. He only had to go into maintenance mode to maintain his ripped body.

"I still work out four or five times a week and enjoy it, but it's not to that extreme level."
